Cosmetic Dentistry in Washington, DC

Cosmetic dentistry is a type of dental treatment that focuses primarily on the aesthetic appearance of your smile. It can improve the appearance of teeth that are stained, crooked, gapped, or misaligned. Our dentist in Washington, DC, can correct these problems with cosmetic procedures such as tooth bonding and porcelain veneers. Cosmetic dentistry may be the perfect solution for patients who are unhappy with their smiles.

Natural Looking Metal-Free Solutions

Metal-free dentistry replaces old metal fillings with tooth-colored or porcelain alternatives. Most patients prefer this look because the silver amalgam fillings look less natural than the white-colored cosmetic fillings that blend in with your smile.

Another reason that most patients choose cosmetic dentistry is to protect their teeth from damage and decay. Tooth-colored fillings are bonded to your teeth, which creates a tight seal that protects the tooth from the bacteria that cause cavities.

Bonding

Tooth bonding may be a good option if you have chipped teeth or want to cover discolorations. The procedure uses a resin-like material that bonds to the natural enamel of your teeth and hides any flaws. After the material is applied to the natural tooth, it will be shaped and polished to create a smoother and more uniform appearance. A composite resin is used so that the bonding material blends in with your natural enamel color for a more natural look. The resin is also much thinner than your natural teeth, making it less noticeable to others. This is an excellent option for filling in small gaps in your teeth.

Porcelain / Ceramic Crowns

A crown is a tooth-shaped cap placed over a tooth to restore it to its standard shape, size, strength, and appearance. Dental crowns are often made of porcelain or ceramic. The process for a crown usually requires two visits at our Washington, DC, dentist's office. During the first visit, the tooth is shaped to allow the crown to sit over it comfortably, and then an impression is taken of the prepared tooth and the surrounding teeth. These impressions are sent to the laboratory where your crown will be fabricated. The impression will also create a temporary crown for you to wear until your permanent one is ready. Once your lab crown is finished, you will return to our office and have the temporary crown removed and the permanent crown placed.

Porcelain / Ceramic Inlays and Onlays

Inlays and onlays are sometimes called indirect fillings because, unlike direct fillings, they are made in a laboratory before being bonded to the tooth. They are used when a tooth is damaged or decayed but do not require a full dental crown. An inlay is a restoration designed to replace lost structure within the cusp tips of the tooth. On the other hand, an onlay is used to restore a more significant part of the tooth than an inlay can repair, but the procedure is the same. The main difference is that an onlay covers one or more cusps. Once the lab makes the restoration, our dentist in Washington, DC, will numb the treatment area and clean it off with a resin to bond the inlay or onlay into place.

Dental Veneers

Veneers are thin sheaths of porcelain or ceramic bonded to the front surfaces of your teeth to conceal a range of cosmetic flaws such as chips, cracks, discoloration, and more. These thin shells are custom-shaped to give you a bright, uniform smile that you will love to show off to everyone you meet.

Porcelain Veneers

A porcelain veneer is a thin shell bonded to the front of each tooth to hide various cosmetic imperfections. Porcelain veneers can provide an even shape while masking discolorations for teeth that are misshapen or irregularly shaped. For teeth chipped or broken, porcelain veneers can mask the appearance of trauma by providing a smooth surface stronger than natural tooth enamel. In some cases, patients choose porcelain veneers for purely cosmetic reasons; however, in some cases, porcelain veneers are also used to protect damaged teeth from further damage.

Undetectable Fillings

The most frequent replacement for dental amalgam is composite resin fillings. Because of their hue, they are commonly referred to as tooth-colored fillings. Composite resin fillings are constructed of a plastic (an acrylic resin) that has been strengthened with powdered glass filler. Composite resin is often put in layers to build the final restoration, then cured with ultraviolet light. This light energy accelerates the chemical process between the components, causing the soft substance to solidify and attach to the tooth. Composite resins' color can be modified to match neighboring teeth closely. This metal-free plastic and glass blend can be sculpted to mimic a natural tooth. It is often difficult to recognize if a tooth has been filled!

Teeth Whitening

You may benefit from teeth whitening if your teeth are stained from years of coffee drinking, tea sipping, or other habits. There are both at-home whitening kits with gel trays you wear at home and professional treatments that take place at the dentist’s office. Both options contain bleaching chemicals that help remove stains and whiten your teeth. Professional treatments by our dentist in Washington, DC, are more potent than over-the-counter products, but our take-home kits are a more affordable option.
